What’s the purpose of swimming pool lights? In a word, safety. If you have a swimming pool and want to use it in the evening or at night, you must have excellent lighting. My husband is a total nut about this; we have an inground pool and he will leave the underwater light on all night even when no one is outside in case a wayward deer or other animal misses its path. Frankly I think he’s just enthralled by the sparkle of the water at night outside our windows because I can’t quite understand why a deer or other animal would want to jump a 4 1/2 foot fence in the dark of night; but I guess stranger things have happened. Swimming pool lighting is quite beautiful at night, and there are a multitude of options for pool owners to choose from.

Underwater Swimming Pool Lighting
Pool owners generally have underwater swimming pool lighting installed as part of the construction process. For safety reasons, namely the risk of electrical shock when combining water with electricity, these lights must be sealed in a waterproof fixture installed in the pool wall.  As there are special and very specific electrical code requirements for wiring a pool, underwater light installations into the pool wall are best left to professional electricians. This light may be a more expensive choice but if you want a bright light in a maintenance-free package, this may be a good reason for swimming pool underwater lighting. Ours illuminates not only the pool but the entire side yard and pool deck. When installing swimming pool underwater lights, it is possible to have different colors for a light show in the pool after dark.  Pool owners can choose from a plastic or a stainless steel face rim.  If lights weren’t installed when the pool was built, you can try a poolside light with a timer.

Above-Ground Swimming Pool Lighting
There’s above-ground swimming pool lighting available in order to enjoy these pools after dark.  You can buy a pool light with a timer to shut the lights off after a certain amount of time.  Colored light options are also available, and you can even buy above-ground swimming pool lights with a fountain attachment.

Floating Swimming Pool Lighting
There are floating submersible pool lights that create wonderful ambiance. You can choose standard rechargeable battery power, or solar-powered floating swimming pool lights.  The beauty of solar pool lights is that as they float in the water during the day, they collect and store energy in their rechargeable batteries.  At dusk, the lights come on automatically.  At dawn, they shut off again.  Their only downside is that the solars may not be as bright a light as you need. Some models of submersible swimming pool lights change color as they float.

There is also a floating disco ball swimming pool light.  This is a battery-operated device that puts on a light show for swimmers under the water. You can choose from five different light patterns. Imagine enjoying your pool at night while the dancing lights change from purple to blue, green to red, and blue to orange!  There are even color LED light pool fountains you can attach to your pump to create colored water fountain effects in the pool.

Swimming pool lighting adds another dimension to your enjoyment of the pool.  Your yard is beautiful, well-lit and safe.  The sparkling water, plus starry, moonlit nights and good company equal pure pleasure. I deeply enjoy my swimming pool lights at night;  I know you will too.
